From Drawing to Delivered Part

Not every project starts with a process in mind. Some start with a drawing, a sketch, or a part that needs to be reverse-engineered. Custom fiberglass fabrication is how we take a project from that starting point through pattern development, mold creation, the right molding process for the part, and secondary finishing, to a delivered component. Clients come to us for the full job because:

The Fabrication Workflow, Start to Finish

1. Requirement Intake

We start with your drawing, CAD file, sample part or sketch, along with the specifications that matter for the application: material, industry, finish, and how the part needs to perform. This is where we scope what the project actually needs before recommending a process.

2. Pattern Development and 3D Digitization

If a pattern does not already exist, we build one, either from your drawing or by digitizing an existing sample part. The pattern is what everything downstream is built from, so this step sets the accuracy of the finished component.

3. CNC Mold Creation

From the pattern, we CNC the production mold. Mold construction is matched to the process the part will run in, whether that is a single-sided open mold for hand lay-up or spray-up, or a matched two-part tool for RTM, LRTM or SMC.

4. Process Selection

With the part and mold defined, we match the job to the right one of our six processes, weighing part size, finish requirements on one side or both sides, and production volume. See the process comparison below for how we make that call.

5. Secondary Operations

Most custom parts need work after molding. We handle painting, and the installation of secondary components in PVC, metal, wood and rubber, in-house, so a part leaves us ready to install rather than as a raw molding that still needs finishing elsewhere.

6. QA and Delivery

Every part is inspected against the original drawing before it ships. If your project needs a specific inspection or documentation step, tell us during quoting and we will build it into the run.

Choosing the Right Process

We manufacture with six processes. Each one gets described in full on its own page, but here is how they compare at a glance.

Hand Lay-Up
Open-mold, hand-built. Suits larger, simpler parts and lower part counts with no matched tooling required.

Spray-Up
Open-mold, chopped glass and resin sprayed into the tool. A faster open-mold option for parts that do not need hand lay-up’s structural build-up.

Resin Transfer Molding (RTM)
Closed, matched-mold process. Finishes both sides of the part and holds tighter dimensions than open-mold processes.

Light Resin Transfer Molding (LRTM)
A lighter-tooled variant of RTM, using a flexible or lighter counter-mold in place of a full rigid second tool.

Sheet Molding Compound (SMC)
Heated, matched-mold compression process. Our highest-volume process, built for runs long enough to justify heated compression tooling.

Vacuum Forming
Thermoplastic sheet heated and formed over a mold under vacuum. A different material class from our fiberglass processes, suited to different part types.

Not sure which process fits your part? Send us your drawing and expected volume and we will recommend the process that fits.
